Gerald McWorter (Abdul Alkalimat) and Kate Williams-McWorter present an April 3, 2019 talk, "Abolitionist Village to the Smithsonian," with the theme of Langston Hughes' poem, "Let American Be America Again," on archaeological and historical research concerning New Philadelphia, the first town in the United States planned in advance and legally founded by African Americans (Frank and Lucy McWorter, 1836). Gerald and Kate presented a recent talk on A History of New Philadelphia, Illinois in March, 2022.

Historian Charlotte E. Johnson presented a talk on June 9, 2020, entitled "Family Ties in Pike County," about the descendants of Free Frank and Lucy McWorter.

Here's a 2013 video-recording of Ms. Charlotte King, a researcher and director of the New Philadelphia Association, testifying at a Congressional hearing in support of federal legislation for the National Park Service to develop the New Philadelphia National Landmark site as a unit within the NPS.

The University of Illinois' Mythic Mississippi Project provides a collection of links to videos on New Philadelphia. For example, you can watch a discussion in September, 2020, between Prof. Helaine Silverman and Chris Fennell about New Philadelphia.

Chris Fennell also presented a February 7, 2020 talk, "Resilience and Racism in a 19th Century American Heartland: New Philadelphia and the Vagaries of Prejudice," in a symposium entitled Revealing Communities: The Archaeology of Free African Americans in the Nineteenth Century, at Bard Graduate Center in New York City. And a longer talk on September 25, 2022, "New Philadelphia: From Archaeology Project to National Historic Landmark," with the Chicago Archaeological Society.

The Illinois State Museum presents a great film, entitled "Reproducing Lucy McWorter's Dress," on the Fashioning Illinois: History Lost and Found program. "Lucy McWorter was a formerly enslaved woman who, with her husband Free Frank McWorter, founded the community of New Philadelphia in Pike County, Illinois. Her dress [in a portrait photograph was determined to date to circa 1856 and] was reproduced for Fashioning Illinois by seamstress Mary Helen Yokem."

You can also watch the great 2009 episode of the WILL-TV (PBS) "Prairie Fire" program about New Philadelphia, which includes interviews with Abdul Alkalimat (Gerald McWorter), Sandra McWorter, Adeola Adegbola, Chris Valvano, Paul Shackel, and Emily Helton, among others.

In 2006, ABC7 Chicago's Janet Davies produced a half-hour film with Hosea Sanders, titled "Rediscovering a Black Pioneer's Dream," with interviews of descendants, area residents, and researchers.
