The image below shows the excavated space beneath the capstone. No human remains were found there. We hit solid bedrock at a level of 12 to 14 inches below the surface. The soil beneath the capstone contained the same general array of everyday artifacts that we found in other units. One might take from this experience the notion that we should not underestimate the industriousness of past residents in moving large stones to create pleasing entrance ways or other aesthetic features in their landscape. |
