Demory House Site Loudoun County, Virginia: Illustration of the "German Continental House" The illustrations below, from Robert C. Bucher's article The Continental Log House, in the Pennsylvania Folklife journal, Vol. 12, No. 4, p. 14 (1962), show the exterior of a typical German-American log house, with one and half stories and a central chimney. In the floor plan, the room labeled "Great Room" corresponds with the Stube or Schtuppe, and the room labeled "Kitchen" corresponds with the Küche or Kich. A second stove often was used in place of the fireplace shown here in the area of the kitchen.
