English artist George Harvey completed this oil painting on wood board, entitled "Harpers Ferry," sometime in the period of 1835-1841. The "Maryland heights" are in the background, and the competing transport modes of the new Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal are depicted in the foreground along the Potomac River's northern shoreline. Construction of the railroad was completed to Harpers Ferry by 1834, and the canal reached that far by 1833. This image was reproduced in The Virginia Landscape: A Cultural History, by James C. Kelly and William M. S. Rasmussen, p. 57 (Howell Press, Charlottesville, Virginia, 2000). |
