Analysis of New Philadelphia State Census for 1855

Frank McWorter died in 1854, but the town he founded continued to grow. By 1855, New Philadelphia reported 81 individuals living in 15 households, an increase of 23 residents, or 40%, more than the 58 residents reported on the federal census only five years earlier. While the town remained bi-racial, the majority, 63 individuals or 78%, were white; 18 individuals, 22%, were recorded as black. The mulatto racial designation was not noted (State of Illinois 1855 census).

Collectively, the total value of livestock owned by town residents was $3,230 or $215 for each of the 15 households. The amount of livestock owned by each household varied widely. While the Squire McWorter family possessed $1000 worth of livestock, the Sandy Brown family claimed $5 worth; only the William Brown family did not own livestock (State of Illinois 1855 census).

The Illinois state census recorded information for the collective household and named only the head of the house. No information regarding employment or place of birth was reported.
